Interview with René Meijer from Lloyds Bank

The greener, the better: the flow towards sustainability      

Just a little longer and it will be live: the innovative sustainability flow from Lloyds Bank. This co-production between Lloyds Bank and Yellowtail Conclusion was developed to encourage homeowners to make their homes more sustainable. René Meijer, Product Owner Mortgages at Lloyds Bank, shares the purpose behind the tool and its positive impact.

Why this sustainability flow?

‘From both Europe and the Dutch government, there’s a strong focus on making homes more sustainable. For instance, the Dutch Climate Agreement states that by 2030, the first 1.5 million existing homes in the Netherlands need to be made more energy-efficient. As a mortgage provider, Lloyds Bank sees a role for itself in this transition. “The greener our mortgage portfolio, the greater our contribution to a better climate. That’s why we want to encourage our customers to improve the energy label of their home and support them in doing so. Together with Yellowtail Conclusion, we’ve developed an innovative sustainability flow to help our customers make their homes more energy-efficient.”

How innovative is the tool?

“We can see that the entire sector is working on sustainability. All mortgage providers face the same challenge: how do you motivate homeowners to actually take steps toward making their homes more sustainable? To make an impact, we need to think creatively. And with this tool, I truly believe we’ve done just that. Together with Yellowtail Conclusion, we’ve developed a sustainability flow that centers around ease and comfort. We guide customers through the possibilities they have in sustainability in a playful and engaging way. The final advice is both useful and personalized. We haven’t seen anything like this in the market before.”

What is the strength behind this sustainability tool?

“If you want to motivate and activate people, you have to lower the threshold as much as possible. That’s why we keep the setup of the sustainability flow very simple. Our clients only needs to enter their home address and a few additional details. From there, the tool automatically collects relevant information from external sources such as the Dutch Land Registry (Kadaster).

Next, the client selects their personal goal for making their home more sustainable. Do they want to save money? Reduce CO₂ emissions? Increase living comfort? Based on their personal choice, the tool provides immediate, personalized advice on how to make their home more energy-efficient, with solutions that align with their personal sustainability goals. This could include options for energy generation, insulation, or ventilation.

The client can directly see the impact of these solutions on their energy label, energy bill, CO₂ emissions, and living comfort. This way, we make the benefits and urgency of sustainability tangible and clear. And all in a highly accessible and easy way. Convenience and simplicity are the strengths of this tool. And of course, it’s completely non-binding; it’s entirely up to the client what they want to do with the advice.”

Why did Lloyds Bank choose Yellowtail Conclusion?

“We chose to work specifically with Yellowtail Conclusion on this tool because they excel at designing customer journeys that offer an optimal user experience. They also have the right integrations with external data sources, which means that our clients need to fill in less details. That adds an extra layer of convenience.

Additionally, the collaboration with Yellowtail Conclusion has been genuinely enjoyable. It’s not only professional, but also highly efficient. In the early stages, we really worked as one team, and there was plenty of room for us to contribute our ideas. The project phases and agreements were clear from the start, and the implementation went flawlessly.”

What’s next?

“The result of this collaboration is an innovative sustainability flow that both Yellowtail Conclusion and Lloyds Bank are very proud of. It provides our clients with a powerful tool to start making their homes more sustainable, which in turn helps us with greening our mortgage portfolio. Because the tool is so easy and accessible, we expect that our clients will really like this service and use it frequently, helping them understand how to improve their home’s energy performance and what benefits it brings.

For now, the sustainability flow is only available to our existing mortgage clients. However, we also see opportunities to further develop the tool to for example new clients. That way, the tool can contribute more broadly to making homes in the Netherlands more sustainable, and also contribute to a greener future.”
